I know this is probably an amature question, but it has me stuck. I am almost done getting the vett back together, and I coudnt remember what wires went where on my starter, and I cant find it in my ls1/ls6 book. I have one purple wire, which I believe goes on the solenoid, but I also have 1 grey fusible link, an orange fusible link, red power wire, black ground? I hooked it up the best way that made sense, and all I get is clicking when I try and turn it over, any ideas??!

From the service manual.....
Important: Orient the purple lead wire to the 10 o'clock position when installing.
#3 Install the starter motor S terminal washer and purple lead wire.
#4 Install the S terminal nut.
Tighten
Tighten the S terminal nut to 4 N·m (35 lb in).
Important: Orient gray and rust harness leads to the 6 o'clock and 7 o'clock position.
#5 Install the gray and rust harness leads to the solenoid.
#6 Install the positive battery cable terminal to the solenoid.
#7 Install the positive battery cable nut.
Tighten
Tighten the positive battery cable nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).
Unless something changed in 04, there shouldn't be a black wire connecting to the starter.
I made this very crude drawing a while back to help someone else out with the same dilemma. The purple wire is what energizes your solenoid, it and only it, connects to the small solenoid terminal.
The thick red wire, as well as the gray and rust-colored wires all attach to the same (outboard) large solenoid post). This post is +12v at all times (when the battery is connected). The inner large post should have a strap or thick wire that runs directly into the starter motor body.
I can't explain the black wire, other than thinking there are a couple of sensors on the block kind of near the starter, maybe you disconnected it there? There is no ground wire that connects to the starter.

That is absolutely EXCELLENT help! One question though, on the starter solenoid you have a post that is outside and one that is inside (one away from block and one inside closest to block). Does the postive go furthest away from the block or closest?

Haha, you beat me to it! I was drawing my picture while you must have posted that. Thanks for the help!! Yeah, I dont remember where the black wires goes, but it is the same gage as the red, and it is bundled together with it...I am thinking it must connect to the bolt right above the starter that would ground it out to the motor??? hmmmm..

The black wire is a ground that gets screwed in above the starter to the block. The length of the wire alone should finds it's home.
Where do the rust, red, and grey wire go after leaving the starter? Im having charging issues where the smaller wire off the starter (fusablelink?) burned off and has very little wire left to repair , so I was going to run a separate wire.
