what exhaust is going to give good performance but not to loud ?
This question gets asked at least once or twice a week, and the responses could fill a book. I spent scores of hours researching all the different exhausts online and listening to as many as I could in person and online, and wrote a relatively brief summary for another user here: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=2008776. You should find that to be a good starting point.
If you're particular about the type of sound, how loud it is (both in and out of the car), and whether or not it drones (one of the biggest complaints about aftermarket exhausts), then you really need to do the research yourself and listen to as many cars as you can in person. You can start by narrowing your search online based on loudness, type of sound, tip styles, etc., and then when you have it narrowed down to a few contenders, try to find cars in your area with the exhaust setup you're looking for so you can give them a listen.
Be sure to listen to the sound inside the car as well as outside, especially in the drone RPM range which is generally around 1500-2200 RPMs for most exhausts on a near stock C5. If you're not familiar with the term, do a search for it and you'll see what I'm talking about. Good luck whatever you decide!

In your search be sure to give Magna Flows a listen. They are just what I was looking for, since they are reasonably quiet, yet authoritative when I lean on the pedal. They also give you a Magna Flow inscribed mid plate, to mount between the inside tips.
A downside is that they are pricey. Besides quality, you're also paying for hi-polished steel, that is, however, barely visible beneath the car.
For price-worthiness hold out until you see a set for sale on the Forum. Hold out if you can; surely the opportunity will present itself, and save you big bucks.

Not as pricey as the Corsas or Borlas when comparing like models (IE the standard Magnaflow to the Corsa and Borla Tourings). I found the standard Magnaflows for around and under $1K at a few different places complete with X-Pipe. That's cheaper than the Corsa Touring which doesn't even include an X-Pipe. However, they're more expensive than say the Granatellis. If you don't care about replacing your H-Pipe with an X-Pipe you can get just the axle-back standard Magnaflow for between $700-$800.
