Default How Much Oil Pressure?

Hi Folks,

How much oil pressure psi should my vette be running? I have ported heads (310 cfm), an aggressive cam and long-tube headers. Right now it is averaging 130 psi under normal driving conditions. Thanks for your help.

You got a bad oil pressure sensor. There is a sticky thread about oil pressure relocation that will give you all the info you need.

Check to see if the oil filter has the bottom blown off of it.

If you have 130 psi you probably have a broken oil pressure sending unit.

Thanks Guys. I thought the high pressure was a bit odd. I will take a look at the sensor.

What are the implications of just ignoring the sensor? Does it impact performance? Or is this something that I need to fix right now? Thanks.

Ignoring a defective oil pressure sensor will not cause any performance or driveability problems.

However, having an accurate engine oil pressure display can alert the driver of any potential engine problems.I would fix it soon!

Sensors are like your sense of touch. What are the implications if you do not know you are on fire?

Look at oil pressure sender unit relocate thread above.

If you have to replace it anyway this will alleviate future pulling of intake etc.

It will leak!! I know from experience.
Here are some misc. notes I used for replacing mine (thanks to fellow forum members):
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/showthread.php?t=958008 (Intake removal)
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1617219 (Cut hole method)

The sensor requires a 1-1/16" deep socket. I found one at Sears for like $8.

Torque specs for the intake bolts are 44 in-lbs for the first pass; then 89 in-lbs for the final pass. There is a proper order to tighten them in as well... begin with the center bolts and work your way to the front/back bolts.

One piece of advice I got from a fellow forum member concerning removal of the intake manifold, was this: Before unbolting it, use compressed air or a rag or whatever you can, to clean the edges first, so that the dirt/gunk built up there doesn't fall into your engine block when the manifold is off!

I think 130 pi might be normal with so many cars having the same reading. Mines been on 130 psi for two months now. I'll fix it someday.

My hi flow oil pump read as high as 99 psi when it was new and the car was cold. Runs at 60 psi warm.

Broken in it only gets to about 80 psi cold as long as I keep the RPMs down. Still runs 60 psi @ 70 mph and 50+ psi at idle.

I mention this because if you have a cam, then whoever did the install may have also put in a hi flow pump. If you did the install disregard this.

25-30 warm idle and 40-45 going down the road or cold idle sounds about right for the stocker.

Just did my relocate this past weekend (see last few posts on relocate sticky). Now have about 28-32psi warm, around 45psi cold. Little over 98,000 miles on stock engine. Had a lot of fine debris packed around intake, but blew it out with air before removing the intake. Thanks to tips from other members on this forum, I knew what to expect every step of the way. You might want to extend the vacuum hose from the back of the intake to make re-installation of intake easier, but be aware one end is about 1/8" and the end on the manifold is about 1/4".

For about the same price (maybe less - I've never seen anything at Sears for $8, if it was craftsman) you can get a "Oil Pressure Sensor Socket" at Autozone or Oreilly auto parts.

Yes, I was surprised they made one for oil sensors too.

It fit perfectly and had a place for the wire to go so you don't have to crimp it -- which is the last thing yu want to do.

I bought the one at Autozone. I copied that from another member. I just compiled all notes.
