On the 98 Vette with automatic transmission access to change fuel filter is very limited. After removing the drivers side muffler,I still could not get both hands in squeeze the plastic tab with one hand and pull on the filter with other hand.
I finally was able to remove it with ease by attaching a small vise grip to the plastic tab and than with 1 hand pulled of the line from the inlet and pulled on the filter to remove it from the outlet line. Took all of 2 minutes to replace.
Attach the vise grip so it only squeezes down on the plastic tab enough to release the 2 locks.

I've got a new filter for my '98 A4, but just haven't crawled under there yet to do the deed! Is removing the DR muffler actually necessary? I've never heard of that being done before.
Thanks,
No pics, but I'm sure I got my set of about 8 diff. sizes at Kragens........for only about $8. There are some fancy billet alum. ones out there for alot more moolaa, but they don't do anything different than the plastic ones. I'd rather put my cash in my gas tank these days!

You can replace the filter without removing the muffler.
Related question. How much fuel rains down on you when replacing the filter? And do you need to depressurize the fuel system beforehand?
The reason I replaced fuel filter was it developed a leak at the outlet connection. When I looked at it right after turning ignition off there was a steady leak for a few minutes untill it depresurized.
When I removed the inlet line to filter, the fuel that remained in the top poured out. I than tipped the filter down and drained some fuel into a small can.
I would definetly recommend depresurizing the system before disconnecting a line
