OK maybe I didn't do the right thing, but I had good intentions. I needed an oilchange so I went to a local MobileOne location. I always have a little chatter in the diff so I asked if he could do the rear. Mine is a little hard because of the exhaust cutouts, they are really in the way. But he said no problem, so I let him do it.
He said their oil "already has the friction additive" so I may not need to add the GM stuff.
I'm moaning and chattering pretty bad. Did circles, figure-8's....not helping. I stopped by the dealer and he said "give it 300 miles, if it still chatters come in and we can add the friction additive".
My only concern - can this damage the internals of the rear if it chatters for too long?
No. I had a limited slip in an Olds a few years back that got so tight on a long drive that it would literally act like a locked diff. The inside rear tire would hop on turns and as I progressed through the turn it would chatter like hell. We were on a long trip so it took a few thousand miles before I got home to get it serviced at the dealer. He dropped in some more friction modifier and I had the car another 90K miles with no diff problems.

add an extra bottle of friction modifier and you'll be fine. the gm procedure if you still have chatter after a fluid change is to add a second bottle of friction modifier.
