Default Update

Heres the latest...In reply to tjwells..Whos paying the bills?..The Dealership wants me to pay $400 for what is half of the install of a new unit ($800). It just seemed to me that they made a call on a burned out adjustment motor without actually checking anything other than the switch. (they had my car for 30-35 Min). So to anser your question I would be paying $400 for what I understand to be a $178.00 part as listed on GM direct parts web site. I know theres labor involved but $600 dollars worth? with $800 being the total cost of a new HUD install. The last call I recieved from my salesman was that they would just set the HUD for me to see. Adjustment still inoperable, not actually fixing the problem. So I could see it but If my wife drove the car since shes a foot shorter than I couldnt. That was Fri as I was leaving town so today Im going to talk with the GM of the dealership. If I had this car for even a few day or a week and this happened I would consider eating some of the cost but I didnt even get it home after I bought it when this problem happened. Question for all: what would you do?..Thank you

I cannot recall if it was stated with a sticker “As Is” or not. Even so, if you pay good money for a used car at a dealership, I would expect it to operate “As Intended”. The $800 total price just includes a full load a Vaseline as their total out of pocket money would be $200.

Maybe I didn't follow you correctly, but the dealer cannot "set it" so that you can see it, without it operating correctly to begin with. The motor that controls the viewing height is inside of the HUD itself. If I was you, have the dealer buy you a new HUD and put it in yourself. Its fairly easy to do and you will know if its working. What isn't a sure thing is the failure may not be the HUD, rather the HUD Controller on the left side of the IP Cluster. Have the dealer buy the set of them therefore both are replaced.

Default Success!!

I just finished talking with my salesman and had him explain what they intended to do. He said they were going to adjust the HUD manually for my view(adjustment still inoperable) at no cost to me. When I told him I didnt think that was a fix. That being told less than 24 HRS after buying a $20,000 vehicle that to repair it correctly would cost me $400 was just not right. I said I wanted opportunity to speak with the GM myself. He said he would have the service director and the GM contact me. It was about 5 minutes when I recieved a call back from my salesman telling me they decided to put a new unit in at no cost to me. I just dont get it why mess around with possibly losing a new customer? What do they think Im going to do with this Vette in a few years when its paid off? And where would I go to buy a new one? Somewhere that I get hosed? There's at least 7 Chevy dealers in my area within 30 miles. Ya think they might be happy to sell me a new Vette? I dont get it. I bet they spend Thousands on advertising to get new customers but then do as little as possible to keep one...Thanks So Much for everyones replies!!

The simple answer for your question is that the dealer is only in business to make money...profit. The more they have to spend to satisfy you, the less profit they get out of your pocket. Also, I know that they cannot "adjust" the HUD to your view without totally removing it, disassembly of the HUD, somehow manually cranking the adjustment motor, then reinstalling the whole thing...Its easier and less expensive for them to replace it. I have no doubt that the salesman woke up and asked the technician what was involved and discovered that he didn't know what he was talking about....So now, they are going to do you a "favor" to make it look good to you.

Default HUD Problem

The HUD on my 99 convertible suddenly quit working - almost like a fuse blew but I can't find a fuse that controls it. One day working fine, next day won't even light up. Ideas?

First idea would be to make a new thread instead of resurrecting an old unrelated one.

That said, I don't recall there being any fuse specifically for the HUD. If there is and it's blown, you have something more serious to address.

If the projector itself is dead, they are quite reasonable brand new from GMPartsHouse (supporting vendor here). I want to say I had about $250 in the whole setup new from them including shipping. Member Gene Culley is the guy you want to contact for purchase.

There is a power-supply on the back of the Instrument cluster that supplies the high voltage AC to the VF displays but if that was dead, I think you'd have other things in the cluster that you could not see.
