Default Mustang 0 Corvette 1/2....read

spirited driving in mexico, GT mustang modded loses. problems occur...

When shifting from 2nd to 3rd... i missed the shift... but the shift know DID go forward... just not into 3rd or 5th or even REVERSE! it just went forward and felt difficult to push and pull back to neutral... it was like a phantom gear only there was no gear and hence the missed shift and the redline....

PROBLEM 2

Well i replaced my oil pressure sensor about a month ago and it died on me again. one day after work i started her up saw 50 PSI (cold oil) and started on my way home. at a stop light i hear a faint "pop" and watch the oil pressure over the next few miles spike all the way out to 180 something psi. now, fast foward to tonight, when i missed the shift, i got a brief "SERVICE VEHICLE SOON" message on the DIC.. it went away within 3 seconds. checked all codes at the next stop light the only new code was P0522H oil pressure sensor low voltage mind you the oil pressure needle was still peaked out as well as the DIC version of it.

So.. whats this phantom gear I always seem to find when i miss 3rd? and why is my DIC just now telling me about the oil pressure sensor!?

Well, no experience with the shift thing, but sounds a lot like what happens to a Datsun 280Z when you shear the pin that holds the shift fork to the rail in the transmission. You might do a search on shift forks. I remember seeing that GM changed fork material sometime and that may apply to you.

Don't know about the DIC but there seems to be an epidemic of bad oil pressure sensors. I would most likely start there although I don't know that it would cause a low voltage code.

Regarding the oil pressure sensor, If yours lasted only a month... you're not the only one. Some failures have happened only one day later. I'd double-check the electrical connection on top for security; and if that's not loose, I'd bet you need another sensor. The DIC may or may not detect the issue... I know when mine failed, the DIC was none the wiser.

One sure-fire way to verify that you DO have a sensor issue (and not a genuine lack of oil pressure) is to turn the key two clicks over to "ON" but don't start the engine. If your sensor is bad, your gauge will be pegged even without the engine running.

my father had a Chev pickup with 4sp floor shift that would occasionally do what you're describing. It would move into position, but not actually shift gears. Then it was heck to try and get the shifter back into the neutral position. Mechanic claimed it was a linkage adjustment problem; but I remember he also replaced a part as well.
