steering lock wtf?
1) Explain how you get every word to start with a capital letter ... and why .....
2) Have you read the sticky at the top of this forum concerning the "column lock" ?????
No problem ... and since you answered me ... I'll give you the "Reader's Digest" version ....
The GM recall has turned out to be more trouble than it's worth. Part of the recall (assuming it was 04006c that was performed) included adding some wiring to the steering column (called the K harness) that was SUPPOSED to solve the problem
Well, good old GM went "cheap" on us, and whoever made the harnesses appears to have used parts from a former Soviet electrical parts maker ..... many of the harnesses fail after a couple of years or so.
GM's current "policy" is "we did the recall - if something is broken on the car it is the owner's responsibility to fix it". People on the forum have reported varying levels of dealer response .... sSome dealer's, apparently as part of a "customer care" policy, will repair the column lock for free, others will do a "deal" such as you pay parts, they'll cover labor, and others just take the GM line and say if it's broke, you gotta pay to fix it. Call your dealer and ask their policy.
In general, though, most people find that the best (and most permanent fix) is to buy and install a CLB kit.
Here's one that is popular ....

Let us know if you need more info .....
- you still have the locking plate
- first off don't drive car
- order a CLB from either thunder racing or corvettes of huston
-Once you have the CLB your ready to start install once you go online and print out the neat how to.
www.ls1howtwo.com, over on the right hand side is a area that says C5 you will see Item 5 is the column lock - click on instructions and then print out.
The guy who wrote this is the one that builds the CLB for Thunder Racing and that is why I bought mine from Thunder racing. Now your ready to install.
If column is still locked insert and turn key- jerk wheel left and right and hopefully it will free up the wheel and the pin will retract - follow the install directions.
The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
When I purchased my car in April 2000 I installed the CLB immediately. After 8 years, I've never had any issue with the Column Lock circuit, and I've never let GM touch the lock with any of their bogus recalls. Since my car is an MN6 they would not have removed the locking plate as they do on A4s so there still would have been a risk of lock-up.
Just passing on my successful experience with the CLB solution.
