Default Cam/Headers Question

Alright I'm not very mechanically inclined so I figured I'd ask the experts on this one. I want to put in a G5x4 (or something of that nature) cam and some lg long tubes but I'm not sure if I will need to change anything else to compensate for the extra power and what not. Like lifters or springs or whatever, that's just it I'm not sure. Might help to add that I've got an 03' Z with 42,000 miles on her and everything is stock except for I've got cold air and exhaust from the x-pipe back.

You'll need to replace the valve springs, timing chain, gaskets and clutch.

With the change in cams and related items, you might find pretty good performance increase if you added a set of long tube headers, to the cam install, and then get your tune done.

^^When you change the cam, you need to take into account the rest of the valve train (lifters, valve springs, retainers, pushrods, etc).

The G5X4 is a he!! of a big cam for driving on the street. You might be better off with a G5X2, G5X3, or ECS cam. You need to focus on power under the curve and not just the maximum numbers.

Usually, when the cam is changed people also put in a ported oil pump and new timing chain. You might also need bigger size fuel injectors to feed your beast.

The best thing to do is talk to knowledgeable people like some of those on this board, the LS1Tech board, and tuners. There are a lot of posts and articles on this subject.

Here is a link to LS1Tech on cams.

Hope this helps.

Edelbrock (ED61969) cylinder heads come complete if you want to go that route. If your going to tear down your block to just the pistons, I'd also buy a modified oil pump assembly to push that oil around better.
