In 2000 corvette switched from passive to active keyless entry. Can anybody shed some light on this matter, what are the differences between both and why the change? Any info would be greatly appreciated...thanx
On the early C5s you could choose active and passive or just active. There was a switch on the key fob that enabled the passive mode. In passive mode the car would lock as you walked away from the car and would unlock as you walked toward it. Depending on the fob you could lock and unlock the car from 100 ft away. It also wasn't supposed to lock the car if the key was in the car. The biggest problem with the passive mode was the sensitivity of the receiver. When I first picked up my 97 and parked the car in the garage the place where I hung the key was less than 20 ft in a straight line to the car. The first night the car kept beeping the horn and flashing its lights all night long. It was continously locking and unlocking. From that point on passive mode was switched off. Although, GM took pains to keep the keys from locking themselves in the car there were many owners that did just that. They left the fob in the car and instead of remaining unlocked the car would lock and the driver was stranded.

just for kicks I tried locking my fob in the car and rocking the car (supposed to lock when passive is engaged). Needless to say it never did and I was glad I expreimented with the actual keys in my hand as opposed to throwing the keys in the car and assuming it would work.
Passive can be annoying but when ur fob is a ways away from the car it's kinda cool and convienent
