Stand next to the car and hold both the lock and unlock buttons for 7+ seconds, according to the literature that came with my car.

And if that doesn't work, owners manual tells you how to program it through the DIC.

Yes, the owners manuals can be downloaded for free by going to the front page at www.gmpartshouse.com. Hover over the downloads link and you'll find it!

That won't program anything. A new key fob has to be programmed through the DIC. The procedure above is for resyncing, for when the sequence of codes is mismatched between an already programmed fob and the car's receiver. If that worked, anyone with a fob could walk up to your car, hold down the lock/unlock buttons, then open your car.

I have a 98 also and here are the instructions I use.

*Switch ignition ON.
*Switch radio OFF.
*Press the RESET button on the DIC.
*Press and release the OPTIONS button on the DIC to scroll through
options until the the display is blank.
*Press and hold the RESET button for 3 seconds.
*Press the OPTIONS button until the FOB TRAINING message is displayed.
*Press the RESET button in order to start the programing mode.
*The message HOLD LK + UNLK 1ST FOB will be displayed.
*Simultaneously press and hold the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons on the first remote transmitter for 15 seconds.
*The display will indicate when the remote transmitter is programmed and when and when to proceed to the next remote.
*Repeat procedure for each additional remote.

Good luck.
