Default Header install problem! Help

I am halfway through installing my headers on my 2000 a4 vette, we got the passenger side in, the drivers side will not go in, any tips would help, we just cant figure it out. Do we take the power steering pump out along with the alternator bracket? tried from bottom and the bell housing or a arm are always in the way. So any tips to get this done would be great.

with the LG's we ended up pulling the atl and the brackets, valve cover and associated coil packs.

What type are you installing >?

With LG Long tubes I only had to pull the alt and coil packs on the drivers side. It did take a little bit of Tetris to get it in position though.

Sorry for the vague answer... but I seem to remember having to start out 90-100 degrees out of position and "spiral" it in. I just went out and looked and I'm 99% sure that's how I did it.

I am trying to install the kook's lt's. I have the alternator out. The motor mount out. I have no clue how to get the alternator bracket off though. Do I have to take the power steering pump out?

Again with the LG's I didn't. I know for a fact I didn't have to remove the engine mount. I'm sorry can't be more help. Hopefully someone with Kooks is reading through these...

I am just not seeing a way to get this in unless the alternator bracket comes off, and I have no clue how to get it off on this car. Unless there is some way for it to come in from the bottom but that way doesn't look good either.

Once yuo remove the alternator, the bracket...on my 97 came off very easily. there should be 3-4 bolts tying the entire bracket to the block. I think there was a bolt facing the front at the bottom of the bracket that was difficult to get at. The rest was straight forward.

I went out and looked again (kinda ticking off the wife (its 10:45 pm here))... It is a PITA to get the alt bracket off (PS pump and res have to be moved along with the EBCM). I remember how much it sucked having to do it on a buddies car to do his heads. Probably not the best way... even if just to save your sanity.

I just called my brother in law (he has kooks) and he said he was able to do it from the top by prying the engine over (he had help) slighly along with pulling the alt, coils, valve cover, and moving the steering shaft out of the way(careful with that... air bags and all). He said it took them a while too...

Best I can do. Good luck.

What do ya mean prying the engine over? I have 4 people helping lol. We tried jacking the motor from the bottom, but it doesn't lean enough. We just cant figure out a way from the top w/o removing the alternator bracket, and from underneath also looks impossible.

Default Kook's Install

I installed Kooks and my 03 A4. There were no problems. You have to remove the steering shaft on the driver's side. The valve covers can stay but the coil pack come off.

These are the instructions. PM me with a fax number and I will fax you a set of instructions.

You don't take both motor mount bolts off at the same time. Leave the passenger side nut on but loosen it so it is only in by a couple of threads and remove the driver's side or loosen it so the engine raises up and pivots on the opposite motor mount. You should raise the motor so the intake just touches under the cowl. It helps to have someone down below to guide the collector past any obstructions as it is lowered. When you are lowing the header and it won't go any further just get a piece of 2 x 4 or something to give the motor a small nudge (like with a lever action) to the passenger side and the header will drop right in. It only nudges a little - maybe less than an inch.

The collector seems to just go into the oil filter/sensor area and hit there. Are you coming from a different angle or something? how hard is the brake booster to take off it would go right in with that off lol.

Here are some pics of when I helped a buddy install his a while back. IIRC, we put them in as the instructions above indicate. We did not remove the alt bracket. We did jack the engine up on each side as instructed.

Jesus was this a miserable day.. The drivers side header took forever. Even with the steering rack out it would not go in. Not sure what was holding it back. We had to beat it in with a dead blow hammer. It broke that water sensor on the front of the block next to the header so I will need to replace that once I find out the part number. But now I am having trouble installing my cat back. Not sure how the pipes are supposed to go in over the axle, We have the sway bar removed but cant get a good angle with the jack stands there or something. But besides that it is nearly finished. About 8 hours of work today and like 3-4 yesterday removing the old stuff. Been fun, But I am tossing some money to my friends dad as he has been a big big help. So far my starter had to be replaces because it was dry rotted or something and when we went to go turn it out of the way one of the wires snapped off. So an extra 200$ expense there. And also that sensor will need to be replaced.
