Default question de jour

So lets say you know someone that has an '01 that's burning oil, (about a quart every 3000 miles). that's lookin' to do some performance mods.. (originally thinking heads, cam, headers).

Is there another way to increase power, for about the same costs, that will address the oil burning issue so he can kill 2 birds with one stone?

(second question: is a quart every 3000 miles even a big deal?)

Thanks yo!

A quart every 3 thousand miles is "normal" usage.

When the issue of "oil burning" was raised with the LSx engine back in about 2000, GM had a policy that they would only consider a car that burned a quart in less than 1000 miles for possible "repair".

Your "friend" has a good engine .... plan changes based on how they affect performance ... not on how much oil the engine is "burning".

I remember many many years ago, when I had a 66 Plymouth that was burning oil, and still under warranty. They agreed to re-ring my 318 V8 only because it was burning more than 1qt. / 500 miles!

1 quart every 3000 miles is not bad. my 01 burned 1.5 quarts in 800 miles.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT back in the seventys a friend ran a car in P/Stock early cuda W/273 cu.in. blew the motor nite before, got an oil burnin.A short block from a local cab co.(it SMOKED!)we put his cam heads on it and smoking and all took the national record the next day.Sometimes a loose engine reuns as good or better than a tight one, due to less parasitic loss. Are you using the correct weight oil?I used a heavier weight in my '03 Z/06 and used a quart in about 2k miles, went back to factory recommended weight and used no oil.and havn't used any oil since about 15k

I guess his worries about oil consumption are overstated..

Sounds like the heads/cam combo is still a good option for power for him...

Can anyone elaborate on the heavier weight oil? From what I understand it's been the recommended oil.

Is the mobile 10-40 a better option in this case? He does live in Texas so there's very little cold weather to deal with (if that even matters)
