Default What size cam?

Alright I'm a newbie to the internals of an engine. I had 1 big engine in my last Trans Am, but i did little more than tell the guys what my goal was and write a check.

Well I'm not looking to go as crazy on the Vette nor do I want to spend anywhere near what I did on that engine ever again.

So my question is what is a mild cam, that is 100% streetable but one that I can hear the lope and get some good performance from. I hear Texas speed may be the place to call and order from, but I'm looking for all my information up front. I want the cam just as much for sound as performance. Currently I have LS6 intake, BBK throttle body, KN dual cone intake, Dynatech long tubes and Xpipe, and Borla stingers. Also this is a 98 A4 with 3.15s

Also what kind of gains would I see doing just a cam install or should I go ahead and do the entire H/C. I want to do it on a fairly mild budget, can't waste too much money with this economy. So no crazy priced AFR heads. Also I would like the cam to possibly work with a future blower addition if I decided to take the plunge.

I guess my hp goal would 425hp at the wheels or better. I have dynpo'd my current setup but I would hope it would be above 350.

Thanks for any help. I tried to search but didn't see much that applied.

280/290 @ 0.050, 8" lift. That should satisfy most of the posters. Spend the money on a good tune. Get a smaller cam on a 112 lobe and tune it well. You should gain a lot of power.

Thanks for the quick responses so far. I really wish I knew what it all stood for but at least it gives me a point to start researching from.

Heres a better point to start your research from.

look at texas speed's PRC line of heads. their 'budget heads' are the prc 5.3 heads, which are great. paired up with a tried and true 224 cam, or if you want to go bigger... a 228 or 230'ish range, and stay above 112 LSA, should easily get your numbers.
