I have a spare motor from an 01 Z06 that ran (runs) well but uses a bit of oil per the previous owner. About a qt every 800 or so, more if running it harder. I have this engine on a stand, and was wondering how hard it would be to install the 02+ GM ring set? A quick kiss on the bores with a hone/stones and away we go?
I know there was a new "positive twist" improved design that eliminated the high rpm oil consumption that LSx motors were famous for in the early 2000's. Make sure the new rings you get have that improved design. Besides that, I would imagine cleaning up the bore (if necessary) would be all that you need to do. I still had the cross hatch on my cylinder walls on my 1997 LS1 after 120,000 mi when the heads were swapped for some ported ones.

Two thoughts ....
* A quart every 800 miles isn't terrible .... it does qualify the engine under the GM definition that an engine using a quart in 1,000 miles or less is "excessive". How comfortable are you with the effort of removing the pistons should help you decide if it is "worth it" ...
* The GM bulletin for the 2001 engine specified that ONLY certaain rings should be replaced .... the other rings should not be touched. No honing should be done of the cylinder walls. The basic idea is the other rings are wearing in to match the cylinder .... don't mess that up .... just replace the ones specified ....
See this link for the GM directions to the dealers for the re-ring .....
