Default PO 430 faults

Hello I have a po430 fault , It is Catalyst system efficency below threshold bank 2. Is there anything i can check besides changing the catalic converter. can i drive it without any long term problems. I changed the plugs, wires. It still does 140 mph with no problems. No one seems to have herd of this condition. Thanks Gary

P0420 and P0430 are catalytic converter efficiency trouble codes. On a car with stock exhaust these generally mean your converters are bad. This is very common on cars with long tube headers and high flow converters. These codes won't affect the way the car runs but will cause you to fail an emissions test and is a general annoyance with the MIL light on all the time.

Did you try resetting it to see if it comes back?

No one has "herd" of it because you are reading the code incorrectly ...

It is a p0430 not po430 (the code is "P" followed by 4 numbers .... 0430)

Try searching on that.

Second, fill out your profile so people know where you live and what year/model car you have, and mods on it. That kind of information is useful in helping you with your problem .... if you live in a metro area of Calif. you have bigger worries with a P0430 than if you live in a rural "fly over" state.

A P0430 means your catalytic converter is failing the PCM diagnostics. Could be caused by an exhaust leak, wiring problems to the rear O2 sensors, or if the cats are severely discolored, by overheating due to poor engine running conditions.

I also have the dreaded P0420 and P0430 codes. They started coming on when I had my headers and high-flow cats. My local tuner said he can turn off these annoying codes. I just need time to get them turned off!

Thanks for the reply. It is a stock 98 C5 with borla pipes and a K&N air filter. I live in Michigan so I have no emission testing. Thanks Gary
