Default ?WHY? am i installing this cam by myself

this is a pain in the you know what..

If you have done a cam please give me some motivation..

i have the hood off, the radiator, and fan out.. It looks so much easier with the a/c radiator out, but ls1 says to leave it in

what a pain in the butt

thank

Loosen the ac compressor, shove it out of the way, and tie it out of the way with sturdy wire-ties or wire.

Just wait till you do your 3rd or 4th solo cam swap

C5/6 work is a joke, compared to military aerospace vehicles

next time leave the hood on

get the crank pulley rem'l tool, search gm crank pulley remover on the auction site

get the cp installer from ls1tech

use 5/16" rods from lowes to keep the lifters in place

if the hood was ON, that would be a good place to tie the ac cond to

post questions, we will answer

hopefully you consulted your tuner on a good grind
just to be clear, it's the a/c condensor, basically it looks like a radiator, don't touch the compressor

There are holes next to the timing chain that you can insert 2 rods into to hold up the lifters. This will save you from having to buy the magnets. Be sure you rotate the cam with no rockers in it to put the lifters up into their keepers.

I've done 3 swaps. 2 on mine, 1 on a buddy's car

If you can get the steering rack out of the way you can definitely swap your cam. There IS enough room with the condensor in place.

Just take your time and pay attention to what you are doing. It wasn't too bad.

how far along are you? I'd be curious to see how it all goes down. I'd like to learn a thing or two.

Hope it goes well for you and kudos for taking on the task DIY. Personally, I going to have an installer do it, I did my time wrenching on bikes.

go to the dealer and spend $20 and get the LS2 power steering pump pulley to replace the pos plastic one on your car. I have an '02 Z as well. The LS2 version is a wagon wheel design so you can loosen the bolts behind it instead of pulling the pulley off. Make sure you upgrade to an Underdrive pulley while you are at it, ASP makes a good one. I thought the power steering was the biggest pita. I left the hood on. The cam was the first real work I had ever done on a car other than spark plugs, oil and lube

Keep those spirits up and have a cold one

Good to know! So, I guess it is even easier on an LS2, huh? The first time i tackled this was my first project outside of changing my own oil. It went fine and car started first try. I went VERY slow to make sure I wasn't busting anything. I still managed to crossthread one hole, but chased the threads quite easily.

As i recall my issues were as follows:

waterpump removal required a lot of patience
power steering pump required a lot of patience
steering rack removal required a big (very big) pry bar
I lost a lot of skin on the edges of the new heads (razor sharp)

A year later, I decided to put on an underdrive pulley while i was changing out the exhaust. Everything was much easier/quicker and I had the water pump/power steering off in a matter of minutes.

I keep a photo album in my rear storage compartment, the feeling of completing the project yourself is worth the loss of skin! TAKE YOUR TIME!!
