Default Service Column Lock - Need Info!!

Hi Folks,

My 98 C5 is giving me a service message "Service Column Lock", it starts but shuts off when I put it in drive. I heard this may be something that was recalled on the C5.
Does anyone have experience with this?
Thanks!

There have been recalls for the CL problem. You can take it to the dealer and have them repair it, or get the CLB by-pass kit. It's a very common problem.

My 02 Z06 just did the same thing to me the other day. I have already had the column lock recall performed so I dont know what is wrong. My vette mechanic seems to think it is something relating to the ignition. He says the computer thinks that the car is being stolen so as soon as it senses movement, it shuts down the car.

DJ, is your security light flashing when the car shuts down?

Get CLB and be done with it, I put one on my Z before the light started doing it's thing.

It about 50 bucks and takes a whole 20 min, and you don't have to worry anymore.

Hi,

No, the security light doesn't flash. This high tech stuff can get a little crazy! Thanks for your reply. Good luck!
My thought is...at least you look good waiting for the tow truck!!!

dont take it in to get it 'fixed'. as posted above, that is not a sure fire way to get it 'fixed' via the GM recall.

get the CB bypass box and be done with it. there is a MUCH higher success rate with it never happening again (actually, i've only heard of 1 or 2 ever doing it again) with the box v/s gm recall.

doing the recall, someone is climbing in your car and taking parts off. your more likely out for scratches, ect on your car than if you do it by yourself in less than an hr in your driveway.

its not hard at all! there are step by step instructions online with pictures. no way you can mess anything up. you could be done in less than an hr if you did it.
there is nothing thats hard to get off or labor intensive, the dash pieces are just like a puzzle, and you have to think before hand how they inter-fit together.
then you have to be a little on the contortionist side and get under the steering column (helps if your on your knees on the driver side outside and laying on the floormat looking up, to plug the box in.
done!
