instrument panel short?

instrument panel short?
I have a constant two amp draw on my 02 C5Z. I've followed Bill's excellent posts about how to measure amps, and that's what I found. I took it to my mechanic, after trying to follow the drain and failing. They are telling me they have traced it to the instrument panel. Does that make any sense? They now want to send the panel off to GM for repair. 2-5 days, 7-800 dollars. Anyone seen anything like this before? I've not heard of a gauge cluster going bad on the C5. Hurry, need an answer before close of business today. Many thanks.

Update: Did the GM thing. I could not swap in another cluster, because the odometer is involved. Had to have my miles and engine hours swapped over, or it's against the law.
The power drain is gone. I am poorer. The car comes home today.
