Default Shifter Problem?

Having a problem with my shifter I think, going into first or second, upshifting or downshifting i don't feel a positive engagement like all the other gears I select.Sometimes it will pop out of gear possibly because it wasn't engaged properly to begin with. It's a 98 with what I believe is a stock shifter.Sometimes going from 1st to 2nd I have to pull back hard at the end of the throw to get it into second. Is there a adjustment for this?I use to adjust my shifters years ago when they had linkage(old school) 78,000 miles on this car.
thanx.

Have you changed your transmission fluid? If you haven't, change it before adjusting the linkage. What you are experiencing is fairly common. My 99 with 110,000+ miles does the same thing . Changing the fluid will help a lot.

3.5 qt. of Royal Purple Syncro Max will do WONDERS. Try that first before you start spending time and big bucks on other routs.Syncro max is the one for the older vets with the paper faced blocker rings. My 2000 with 57K was getting very cranky getting into first when sitting in neutral at stoplights. Royal purpled it and MAN what a difference!! Try it you'll like it,,it most likely will take care of your problem. While your at it use the turkey baster method to empty your clutch master cylinder and refill with dot 3 or 4 fluid. Drive for a while and do it again. After a few times your clutch system will be cleaner and function better as well.(this is referred to as the "Ranger method") Do these two things and it's almost certainly solve your problem!!!

Default transmission fluid - 98 vert 6 speed

106,000 kms....not sure if transmission fluid ever changed. Would the local oil change shop be able to do this, or that a mistake to leave this change in the hands of kids who change oil all day?

thanks in advance.

I would probably take it to a garage that does repairs, rather than a place that just does oil changes. I do my own work, but if I did not I would take it to a place that I had dealt with and trust or a place that specializes in Corvettes.

The answer to your question is, no, there is no adjustment on the shifter. It is just a characteristic of the stock shifter. The rubber bushing makes it hard to feel if the gear fully engages. I switched to a Hurst shifter, which is a little stiffer, but there is no question when it goes into gear, and I have never had it come out of gear since I made the change.
You have to realize that there are really two clicks for the transmission to go into gear. You might be able to get it to shift a little smoother by changing fluid, but you still need to get the feel of when the transmission is fully engaged.

Put the royal purple in the trans. fri. there is a improvment in the shift effort.I still think I will try to adjust the shifter.Overall I'm happy with the results from the syncromax.

It still poped out 1 time,I still have to make sure it is fully engaged in second gear. The shift effort is much better, the royal purple worked good for that. I still have to properly change the clutch fluid using the ranger method.I'm gonna do that before I attempt anything with the shifter. Can't do it now cause I'm working on my 93 ,sanding and polishing the sawblades.Probably will get to the 98 next week.
