I got a postcard in the mail from GM yesterday stating their records show I haven't had the recall. I have a 2000 with the column lock bypass. Two questions: What are the consequences of stubbornly refusing to have the recall done? Also, are there many reports of column lock problems after the recall? I remember seeing one report of problems, but that seemed to be due to poor installation.
I am just sturborn, I like the way it works. I refuse right now to have it done! I have 4 more years under the extended warranty, I guess they will have to fix it even after the recall expiration date.
My service writer wanted to apply the recall every time my car was in the shop. I finally told him about the bypass I had installed myself and he's never asked me about it again.
There are no consequences to not having the recall done...I have done at least 60 of the recalls and the only problem I have had was a faulty recall relay on 2 occassions on 2 different cars,a week after the installation (these were A4 cars, different relay than M6)...The faults that I have heard with the M6 recall were due to improper installation...I havent seen many "column lock" posts lately,so it looks like the recall was succsessful, and I am not getting 3 per week towed in with locked columns anymore ;)
I also recently rec'd a recall card from GM. Since I have the "bypass" installed, I have no plans on having Chevy do any work on this item. You do however, have to alert your dealer not to mess w/ the bypass or they may take it upon themselves to do the modification. There have been a few threads on this forum which indicated dealers have checked the car history, & found the recall was not taken care of. They (the dealers) took it upon themselves & changed parts.
Ya, they don't have the right to do work you don't OK, but we all know that shi_ happens.
You really cant blame the dealers, they are following GM guidlines :yesnod:
The ironic situation here is that this is the 1st recall that I can recall (no pun intended) were the customer may not want the recall performend...
This is stated in every recall, please read:
Dealer Campaign Responsibility
All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this campaign MUST be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this campaign bulletin BEFORE customers take possession of these vehicles.
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, through July 01, 2003.
Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer. Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. This could be done by mailing to such customers a copy of the customer letter accompanying this bulletin. Campaign follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter.
In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service prior to July 02, 2003, you must take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.
