Default New tire pressure sensors will not program, Help Please !

Hi Folks,

I put new wheels and tires with new TPS's on my 99 convertable. I have followed all the instructions from posts on the forum here by doing a search. I have tried three different magnets and I get absolutely no response. The last magnet I just tried is VERY strong but still no go. The original TPS's worked fine when I took the stock wheels off. I contacted the guy I purchased the wheels/tires/TPS from saying that I wondered if the TPS's even got installed. He had me send him a close up pic of the valve stem and replied that they were indeed installed. I absolutely hate the thought of taking it to the local stealer as I know they will charge me an hour labor minimum. You guy's in the know have any ideas for me ? This is really frusrating me !

Thanks a bunch,
-Garry

Is the generation of sensor you need for your 99 the same as the sensors installed in the wheels you bought? 97-00 used one sensor, 01-04 used a different one.

I am wondering that as well. It would make sense why they will not respond if they are the later models. Dayum, I sure hope I don't have to dis-mount the tires to find out, that would really be a PITA.

Why not ask the guy you bought the wheels from?

Well, the guy I purchased the Wheels/Tires & TPS's from confirmed that the correct TPS's were installed. Any other thoughts from you guy's before I break down and take it to the local stealer ?

Thanks,

-Garry

Do you know someone that has a 01 - 04 C5? I'm thinking you could pull up next to his car and see if one of your wheels will re-program / calibrate when he runs the recal routine for his car. Your wheel would have to be very close to his car, or maybe even mounted on his. If it does you know your new wheels have the wrong TPS in them. Your friend would then have to recalibrate his again.

Did you try it on all the wheel and get the same result or just one?

Just a thought

Good idea it would cost a lot less to even switch a wheel with a 01-04 then break a tire down and risk a scratch.

Good thought, in fact your idea gives me the idea to roll one of my old wheels which still have the original TPS's up to the car and see if it programs. If it does'nt, perhaps there is something wrong with the car's receiver.

Did you see the sensors before they went in? The older ones are a lot bigger then the 01-04. If you need a pic of the older ones let me know I have a few on the bench I can send you a pic of.

Can you LOCK/UNLOCK your doors with your key fob ?? If you can, there is nothing wrong with the receiver (called the RFA - Remote Function Actuator) because it receives the signals from the key fobs also.

You need a BIG magnet and you have to hold it over the sensor which is located inside the wheel .... it is not the stem that you are trying to "energize" ... it is the sensor inside the wheel.

I just reprogrammed mine today. I used a small but powerfull magnet out of an old hard drive. It only took 2 to 3 seconds for the horn to sound and I was able to do all 4 sensors in less than a minute. GarryL, do you have an update?

You will definitely need a powerful magnet. The Hard Drive Magnets work the best. I bought some magnets at the local hardware store and they seemed strong to me, but weren't strong enough.

Also keep in mind that i can take 10-20 seconds of holding the magnet in place before the horn sounds.

The Lock/Unlock works fine with the FOB and the FOB training works fine as well.

No real update yet guy's. I would like to try even a stronger magnet like some of you suggest before I take it to the stealer dealer. The third magnet I tried was pretty darn strong I thought. I think I will take a run to Radio Shack today and see if they have a suitable magnet to try.

Thanks for all your input on this.

Still frustrated with it, -Garry

Before spending $ and time for new magnets try what you may already have- those screw picker upper tools, an old speaker component. or one of those magnetic "nut and bolt" dishes. Refridgerator magnets do NOT work.

This, as far as I can tell has never been answered. The OP says the "correct" sensors were put in but were they correct for an 01-04 or correct for his car.

Update, Update....

I went to Radio Shack and the guy handed me the strongest magnet he had and let me take it outside and try it. It wasn't any stronger than anything I had tried yet so I didn't have a lot of hope. I was right, no go with this magnet either. The guy told me to try a computer repair place just down the road. I went there and talked to the guy. He had some "Neodymium" Magnets, said they were the strongest you can get. On the packet it even says "Not for children". I thought to myself, this is a good sign. They were $4.75 for three of them. Got home and tried them out, BINGO, the horn beeped within 3-4 seconds of holding them by the left front. Went around all the other corners and got er done !

So, first of all, thanks to all of you for your input and help !

Second, for others that have the same frustration, go get yourself a set of these super magnets and avoid the frustration I had with this.
I'm not kidding, I told my wife to stick these on the fridge to see how strong they are. You can't pull them off the fridge without sliding them to the corner. They are just a little bigger & thicker than a nickel and come three in a package.

Cheers,

-Garry

That's great Garry. When I chose to use the hard drive magnet, it was after reading a lot of posts. It sounds like a small, very powerful magnet is definitely the way to go. Hopefully other will learn from your experience.
