I've been sitting on the fence on the whole "air box mod" issue for almost 2 years now. I finally took the warranty friendly (although less HP beneficial) 2002 Z06 air box approach. Well here's a new reason why I'm glad I did. I popped the hood to do the install this morning and there sitting on my engine is............ a FREAK'N RAT!  It scampers across my fender to places unknown. I have a nice clean garage in a good neighborhood so I don't what's up with this bull$__t. I looked for possible damage and could see none.
I'm glad I installed the air box today or who knows what might have happened. So the bottom line is.....Mod your car often as a check for critters! :D
You have just scared me...and I don't scare easily...excuse me while I go to the garage on RAT PATROL!!! :mad  :chevy
Did you go with the K&N???
Know what that is like. I had the oil changed on my 98 coupe and was checking the oil after I got back home and noticed a mouse nest near the fuel rail. The darn dealer never mentioned this fact after he had changed the oil! Set many a trap after that incident.
Okay on the rat...but how do you like the 2002 Z06 Air Box? Can you tell if it
really helped? I tried to order one with the new engine and 'they' are out of
stock in this area.

silversport,
I guess I'm a weenie :( , I went with a new factory filter. Did anyone else see the response in Corvette Quarterly to an owners question about air box mods? I could swear they said a K&N was a bad idea. I wish I still had that issue because I'm thinking I must have read it wrong. I've never heard anything but good things about K&N. Does anyone still have the last issue?

My take on the '02 Z06 airbox cover...I have the stock paper filter...I did several WOT runs...a little louder...seemingly more midrange grunt and it pulled like a freightrain to 107 where I turned it off (just the speed, not the engine)
This could, of course, be in my mind. I am happy with the mod...I have seen negatives on the K&N but I keep hemming and hawing on this "mod."
I have had my K&N in for about 600 miles with an airbox modified by me   It has two big holes in the front now for lots of intake from my Z06 front air screens. Sounds a little louder from intake side, SOTP feels faster, no codes, no negative effects. So maybe those who have said negative things, have never used it :cuss
Not bad advice! I was installing a lower temperature thermostat in my Z-28, and had to remove the rubber bellows above it. I carefully pulled it out and found it ripped on the bottom. There's no way to see that damage without taking it apart. Who knows how long it was ripped, or what kind of junk got sucked into the engine bypassing the air filter. I suspect a visit to the dealer caused the problem. When the technician re-installed the bellows, he wasn't careful, and folded the lip, causing it to eventually rip.
I installed the 02 Z06 lid with a K&N and the car really pulls much stronger above 3500 RPM's. Of course without a before/after dyno this is just SOTP measurements but I have to believe part of the HP increase between the 01 and 02 Z06 was due to better front end breathing. Stands to reason the LS1 would also benefit from the mod.
In any event I would have to say that a C5 with this mod will have an advantage over a stock C5. Plus the the cost is right about $110 and no fear of water ingestion. How can you go wrong.

Tom, some of are more sensitive to water ingestion. The sound of a C5 sucking in water is one I will never forget and NEVER (ever) want to hear again. I have one of the 02 Z06 lids on back order.
K&N filters are fine; I have used them in all my cars for many years without any problem. They filter effectively and are much less restrictive than OEM units. :yesnod: :)
