You will never get a good answer for this question. Both claim their increase in power is at high speeds with the air being forced in so dynos on the two are not a true test of what they do. Varram has probably sold ten times more then vortec but in my opinion they just have a better marketing team then the others out there. the number of units sold does not always correlate to the effectiveness of the unit.
Much of this is subjective for practical purposes. That being said, I've hung with the Vortex for years....... easy install, easy filter access etc.
BTW people tend to go wacko over cleaning and oiling these filters. I've had the same one for 15,000 miles and check it periodically, never cleaned or re-oiled as it just isn't necessary. Throttle body is clean as a whistle etc. Remember, that's why they tout the 50,000 mile interval for service.
I just installed a Vararam myself, cant say which is better but I'm a true believer in cold air intakes now. going through some of my old logs my intake temp will fluctuate between 90-145 degrees with the stock airbox
my first log with the Vararam it was steady between 84-87 degrees

Two words......... Vara..........Ram. I have had both and the times at the track prove that the VR is superior on the street/track. Now if you want dyno numbers then the Vortex is the way to go, it will show a few HP higher on the dyno. From my considerable experience (having had every intake on the market except the Honker) it goes like this.
