The first thing you should do is run the On Board Diagnostics yourself. Press and hold the Options button and then push the fuel button 4 times while holding the options button. This will start the automatic diagnostics and will cycle through every system on the car. Your code should show up in the PCM section. I assume the code is a P1416 C based on the results of your inspection.
Send me a PM with your e-mail and I will send you a file with the diagnostic procedure. It is probably one of the check valves in the AIR system. This code indicates the O2 sensor didn't see an expected change when the AIR system was commanded on. Since the O2 sensor is working in other modes this means the problem is in the AIR system. By the way I would get a new mechanic. This one doesn't know much about the systems on your car.
