Default Clutch adjustment?

The clutch pedal in my '03 Z06 seems to come quite a ways up before engaging. Is there any adjustment to be made for that or does it mean the clutch is on its way out?

These clutches are hydraulic and "self adjusting". That said, you may want to change your clutch fluid. Use a "turkey baster" to suck out most and replace. You can use DOT 3 Brake Fluid in the clutch.

FWIW, I thought the engagement point on my C5 was kinda high when I bought the car with 12K on the clock. Now three years later at 55K, it's at the same point and the clutch doesn't slip.

BTW- That was coming from a 4th Gen T/A, so it's not like I was comparing it to a Honda. I had to adjust my technique to use less of the pedal travel when I shift. No reason to go much past the point of full disengagement, or you're just adding stress to the TOB.

I agree completely....it feels weird the full disengagement is like at the half way point...takes some getting use to....

what is the TOB?

TOB=throw-out bearing. And I'm no clutch expert, in case someone wants to chime with a different opinion. But there was a very long thread on the subject a while back, originated by Chuckster, IIRC, and that was the final verdict.

My '02 Z06's clutch engages near the top as well - I thought I was the only one.

FWIW, I always kick the pedal all the way to floor on every shift. No sense in potentially stressing the synchros with lazy pedaling..

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Sounds like it's normal and I think I'll go ahead and do the fluid change using the turkey basting method!

Hi Lou -

Good choice - over time it does seem as though my Z has moved the engagement point slightly higher in the pedal movement, but I have no way to prove that with measurements.

I am a devout follower of the Ranger's fluid freshening technique - I use a turkey INJECTOR, the kind that come with cajun seasoning for deep frying a turkey.

best regards -

I agree with you in theory; I'd rather wear on the clutch than the trans any day. And, FWIW, I don't ever powershift my car, even at the strip. I don't consider a few thenths worth risking trans damage, especially since my C5 is a daily driver.

However, once you've reached full disengagement of the clutch, I don't see how pushing the pedal down further saves wear on anything. If you've ever drag raced, you know that you have to find the engagement point in the pedal travel, then hold the pedal just past that point before release in order to cut a decent light. Once you have a good feel for that point in the travel, IMO, you are smoother on shifts without using the full pedal travel.

Not trying to be argumentative, YMMV, just relating my experience.

I made a bunch of measurements on my clutch pedal and engagement point when my Zee was pretty new for a baseline. I think I posted the info on the other site ... here's a few old thread on the subject.

Good stuff.

Without having measured, I'd say the engagement point and take up characteristics of my clutch are very close to that. Has yours changed much since then?

No change in my clutch engagement/pedal position as far as I can tell. I have not remeasured since then, but if it changed some I'd probably notice it. I try to change the clutch fluid in the reservoir at each oil change since it only takes 10 minuted to do. I'm also pretty easy on my clutch ... never slip it and never hammer the throttle until it's fully engaged -- I let the rear tires take the abuse instead of the clutch.
