They both use the same data .... the PCM reports the coolant temp to the IPC which then displays it on the gauge and the DIC. Neither is more "accurate" .... though the DIC reports the data in a digital format, which may seem more "precise".

You are correct, but in my experience the guages generally are not in the best calibrated state. The DIC is always the more accurate of the two. For example, set your cruise control at 70 MPH according to your guage, 8 out of 10 Vettes i see will generally report 2-3 MPH difference on the DIC vs the guage. (IE the needle is set on 70 for cruise, but the DIC will report cruise set to 67-68 MPH)
