Not sure what you are trying to do, but there are two cables on the A4 shifter. One goes to the ignition switch and the other to the transmission. I'm pretty sure both have to be unhooked before the shifter will come out.

If you're talking about the electrical conection on the driver's side of the trans. Don't try to discount the conector (they weld them selves together) , just remove the whole plate the conector is attached (2- 10mm bolts) and slide it over the shaft.
