Default 1999 C5 TPMS Question

I have done a search and have read several threads on the TPMS and had a few questions since it seem so confusing.

I have a 1999 and the DIC displays the message Service Tire Pressure Monitor System. I get a reading on all but the right rear. I realize that the battery may be low but I am hesitant to do a relearn in case the monitors do not respond.

Are the C5 like the C6 where you are not able to go into competition mode if the TPMS has an error. I have just been hitting reset on the DIC to get rid of the message. I don't mind having this annoyance. Is that all it is on the C5 or will there be other problems to come. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The more I read, the more confused I get.

Thanks for the help.

1) On a 1999 "Competition Mode" is only available if your car has RPO JL4 installed (Active Handling).

2) On a 1999 the TPMS has no effect on Active Handling ... that is a C6 function

3) The reason you have TPMS is because you have run flat (EMT) tires installed.

4) A "flat" (deflated) runflat visually appears to be normal (inflated) .... the TPMS are there to warn you of a deflated runflat

5) A deflated runflat can be driven on, but high speed maneuvers may cause the tire to fail, causing loss of control of the car

6) Install a new sensor .... ignoring the problem can be dangerous.

with Black Z06. Probably time for 4 new TPM sensors, if they've never been replaced. Most folks agree the batteries are only good for 7-10 years.

Yes, batteries will give out. Also the centrifugal micro switch that activates it can stick and cause a failure. About the only thing you can do is replace it. There is a place that will repair them, but their website is infected with spyware really bad.

I’m not sure but when I put on aftermarket wheels the light was on for a while. After disconnecting the battery the light never came on again. I don’t have sensors in the wheels anymore. Thy are expensive to replace and not worth the aggravation in my opinion. I don’t run run flats on my car anyway.

Just a thought here is if you aren't running runflat tires, then I personally would think the TPMS is even more important in case you pick up a nail.

Don't know what "light" you are talking about .... you will get a SERVICE TPMS message on the DIC at various times.

Driving without the sensors with "standard" tires means that when you get a flat, the first thing you will know is when the rim is down on the road. Most Corvette rims (wheels) cost far more than a set of TPMS. Your choice .... ruin a wheel or put in new sensors ...... also realize that the Z06 cars, which don't have sensors, came with fix-a-flat kits and inflators .... you'll have no choice with a flat than to call for a tow truck ..... with the sensors many people find they can "limp" to a service location before the tire is completely flat because they are warned of low pressure long before the tire is completely flat.

Your car .... do whatever you want with it.
