I recently bought my first Corvette, finally fulfilling a dream I've had for more years than I can (or choose) to remember. It's a 2004 magnetic red convertible, oak top and interior. Now that I've got the initial driving out of my system, I'm thinking about some mods. From the forums, many say changing the air intake is an inexpensive first mod that can add 15 bhp +/-. Also from the posts, I found that my local speed shop was looking to make quite a few xtra bucks telling me the install was about 4 hours job. So first I'd like to say thanks to all like Patches who saved me more than $250 before I shelled out one buck. My question is this; does a Blackwing installation on a base 2004 require an adapter or not? I have seen it explained both ways, so I've come to the experts for clarification.
YES, buy the kit for the 2004. It comes with everything you need. You will be very happy with the new found throttle response. It wakes up the stock c5 considerably.
Don't believe the horsepower improvements though. You'll hear more air intake sound which most owners correlate with more power.
Depending on your altitude, you may experience some intermittent codes, at least I did when I first installed a "Blackwing" at 5,200 ft altitude.
I decided a professional dyno tune was probably in order, but spending another $500 and driving 300 miles round trip wasn't what I wanted to do. I removed mine in favor of a modified Z06 intake and gauze filter.
Most such installations go w/o a hitch...

Thanks for the information. Took a bit longer to order it than I first thought as usual. The installation was definitely a snap; say 20 minutes of work time. Only hitch was that the band clamp supplied with the 4" adapter was exactly 4"; it needed to be at least 1/4" longer.
I have a follow-up question. From what I've read in other threads, does anything need to be done to let more air in to the filter? I've seen loooong discussions about replacing and/or cutting the fog light shrouds.
Is that modification necessary for a Blackwing?
If you open the fog light shrouds you will theoretically get cooler air into your Blackwing but you will also get unfiltered dirt. Didn't do it with my install.
It took me about 30 mins to install and it was the first time I did it. If I had to do it again it would probably take about 10 min. 4 hours = they are ripping you off cuz they think you are rich b/c you own a vette.
As far a HP increase , not noticable, maybe a few if you do a before and after dyno. Makes the car sound a tad bit meaner though!
