Default Lesson I learned today...

Never ever run over ANYTHING in a C5. Not even something as innocuous as a 5 cent plastic bag.

I'll post the pics of my Drivers side fan motor when they get approved. Locked it up rock solid...

Who'd have thunk it...

Yup ... these cars are "bottom breathers" .... effectively both air for cooling the engine and the engine intake air are pulled from the area under the car ... whereas most cars take in the air through a front "grill". They will vacuum debris off the road.

Wife just dodged this same bullet in her C5 recently. Got a plastic bag stuck in the driver-side rad/fan area and called me from the shopping center to come take a look due to a flapping racket she started hearing. I drove over and pulled most of it out until I could get it home and clear the rest. Amazing how much of it was sucked right through the rad fins.

Hi Jim -

Freak occurance -

Yes - these do suck up a lot of crap, but you are the "lucky" victim of a freaky one.

I have found everything from cigarette butts to soft-drink cups!

Well - at least it is an easy fix.

Thanks for the report -

best regards -

I wouldn't count on that. Most screens that I have seen installed to keep debris out have too large of a grid to keep the damaging debris out and if it is small enough to stop that stuff then it will get clogged just like the A/C condenser does.

I put in the screen from Elite Engineering when I installed my Callaway Honker; it is powdercoated steel and has a fairly fine mesh. I cleaned out a lot of crap - leaves etc. when I installed it. I was under the car the other day and shone a trouble light up there and was amazed to find it was very clean and free of debris- nothing on the rad. Even the air filter looked pristine. I consider it an essential addition to a car with a CAI that breathes through the shroud.

I cleaned mine out and installed a DIY screen about 6 months ago, and it stays pretty clean also. One thing is certain, you won't have to worry about plastic grocery bags.

I drove over a wal mart bag, looked in the rear view, didnt exit, in the pouring rain in florida, i stopped at a parking lot, got on my hands and knees and pulled it out ASAP

also when i was changing some light bulbs, i found a styrofoam cup way up the radiator, luckily i do weekly inspections on all my vehicles

Those pics look pretty bad. Sorry about your misfortune. Haven't had that happen to me yet but its probably just a matter of time.
