OK not sure if its a problem, but I'm 6' mostly legs and like need the seat all the way back. My wife is 5'2" and puts the seat almost to the front. I'm #1 on the memory and she is #2. I cant get the memory button to work till the car is started. So I have to almost rip the seat cramming myself in the car to start it and hit the #1 memory button.
Are they all like this?
Yes I do know I can get the seat back buy pushing the electric button on the seat to get it back before entering the car, but what a pain.
I have the same issue. I think my key fob's battery is getting weak. I have to sometimes reset the memory for my settings, as #2 seems to override. I do know that you have to have the car locked, and use the key fob to unlock for the memory settings to work. So if I leave the car unlocked in the garage, and my wife uses it, just turning on the car doesn't set the car up for me. I have to use the memory switch, or lock, and unlock the car with the key fob to get it to change.
Have you tried the "easy entry" feature? It's in the options list in your DIC. It moves the seat fully back and telescopes the wheel all the way in, when you hit the unlock button on your remote.
I have a 98 with drivers memory seat. If you have the same; the driver seat will retract to the full "back" position with the key out. Inserting the key after setting in the seat will cause the seat to move foward in reference to the last known memory setting. If not, you may have to go into the options from the DIC.
If you turn on the easy entry/exit, the seat should slide to the full rear position every time the key is removed. The if you push the fob for #1 or #2 as you approach the car, the seat will automatically move to the correct position when you insert the key with the door closed. You won't have to push any buttons in the car.

Not all the time. If you do not use the FOB to lock/unlock the doors the memory function is not active. If you used the FOB to open the door when you turn the car off the seat will move back. However, if you did not use the FOB to open the car the seat will stay where it is when the key is pulled.
However, with easy exit on even if the car is unlocked if you hit the FOB when walking up to the car the seat will move back.
If there is something wrong with the system you can always reach down and push the button on the seat bottom side back and the seat will move back whether the key is in the ignition or not.
Mine must be broken then. Every time I pull the key out, the seat slides to the full rear position and the steering wheel retracts. I don't usually use the fob because the car is inside with the key in the floorboard. I put in the key, push the #1 memory button and everything sets. Then when I get back, pull the key out, the seat and wheel pull back for easy exit.
The easy exit works since I set it up but when I put the key in it starts to cram me into her memory position unless I quickly push my pre-set button. Key fob don't have a memory button so has no effect.
The key fobs don't have a memory, but the car does. When you use the first fob trained, and push unlock as you approach, once you insert the key with the door closed, the seat and wheel will go to memory position one. If you use the second fob on the training procedure, the same thing will happen going to the #2 memory position. From the factory, the fobs are marked #1 and #2 and are programmed in that order. If you have changed the order in the DIC, they will be backwards. Just use the same fob all the time for yourself and let her use the other and it should work as designed. Remember, you can also not use the fob, get in and push whichever memory you want and get the same results.
Unlock the car with YOUR fob, THEN set your memory options. Next time you use that fob, the settings will return to what you programmed. Same for the wifes fob.
I have the same situation. I use the 'Easy Entry' option. When either of us takes their key out, the seat moves back, and the steering wheel retracts.
When either of us get in, close the door then put the key in, the seat goes to the preset for that key. I have three keys, and three presets. They all work great.

That's not the way my 03 works. How would it know the difference in keys? They have to be the same cut and the same resistance pellet. the only way it knows which memory to go to is the remote or the memory button on the door. That's why they number the fobs 1 and 2, but not the keys.

Well, I concede. Ijust re-read my owner's manual. It states the three memories are linked to three FOBs. So, when you unlock the car with your FOB, it loads your presets. The car does support up to three FOBS.
Thanks for allowing me to re-learn how this works!
It took me several tries to figure out why sometimes the memory worked and sometimes not. I finally realized that when I used the fob it worked, but when I left it unlocked and put the key in, I had to press the button. I wasn't smart enough to read the manual, it would have saved me some time.
