I have a 97 coupe and i saw the belts were starting to crack so i replaced them. now i find that the main drive belt wants to keep jumping backwards towards the engine about 2 grooves off the pulley. i have re-installed the belt several times and even tried installing it the opposite way. but the same thing happens. it walks up the back side of the crank pulley towards the a/c belt about 2 grooves and stays there but sits on all the other pullies just rite.... anyone got any ideas as to what the problem may be?
do you have the proper tension on it? Is the routing correct? With the proper tension there is no way the belt can lift up enough to jump the grooves IMHO
How can you have anything but the right tension on it. its a self adjusting tensioner. its not lifting from lack of tension its almost like something is putting enough pressure on it to push it that way and then it juts stays there. cant figure it out
Is the harmonic balancer still on all the way? One of the pulley's isn't lined up any more therefore you need to figure out which and fix.
looking at it makse me think the idler pulley under the alternator may have moved in towards the block some how and is making the belt walk over the ridge on the crank pulley(ballancer)
maybe the balancer isnt on all the way i will have to check it the next chance i have
Your crankshaft pulley and/or ballancer is headed toward the power steering rack, not good, and a common problem. STOP now and get a good inspection and get it fixed if my theory is correct. The farther it goes, the more expensive it gets!
