I finally solved the detonation problem with my 01 A-4. I was told by my tuner that Mobil is the worst gas to use. I changed to Chevron and the pinging went away. I guess gas brands matter?
I also changed the plugs to NGK's 55 which also helped solve the problem.
Re: Detonation problem solved, poor fuel (CAracer)
Here in Florida the octane is 93 so maybe that's why I have not had a problem. I lived in California for a while, so I agree that the ARCO gas is crap.
Re: Detonation problem solved, poor fuel (CAracer)
I also live in florida and never had a problem with mobils 93 octane. I use only mobil or amaco altimate clear also 93 octane and very good fuel. :chevy
Re: Detonation problem solved, poor fuel (CAracer)
CAracer, ditto's.....................100% AGREEMENT...............
I since day 1, have used only Texaco 93, or Chevron 93.......usually Chevron, because the Techcron is GOOD stuff.
Anyway, one day last week, I decided to try some Mobil 93, hadf not driven more than 20 miles, and I get pinging BAD at aound 45-55 in 4th, and 5th gears......
Car has less than 3500 miles on it, and NEVER ever had done this before........went to the Chevron station, filled up..........drove around for a while BINGO........never ANOTHER PING.................
So, no more Mobil for me................ :yesnod:
Re: Detonation problem solved, poor fuel (CAracer)
It is amazing to see how the message changes with the messenger. When I had my Superchip installed at the factory in my SVT Lightning, they told me to run Mobile exlusively. I did, and nary a ping.
Re: Detonation problem solved, poor fuel (CAracer)
Since the downgrade in fuel to 91 octane happened here in CA. I too have experienced problems with pinging. Chevron fuel has made a difference in my car and I understand the added Techtron additive helps clean the injectors too. If that is the case, it seems that the Chevron Fuel is hard to beat! :)
Re: Detonation problem solved, poor fuel (skydive69)
I am convinced.......that Mobil 93 in Dallas, may not be Mobil 93 in Fla, or NJ..........
Exxon used to be one of the very best.........
I have not used any in a long time.......I plan on trying some soon.
Same for Shell Super Shell.................
Also, just because the pump says 93, doesn't mean YOU are actually GETTING 93.............
Depends on WHAT station you use, most here are franchised, no mfgrs stations anymore................just a right to put up the sign, and buy their products......no exclusivity here.......
