Default [Codes] When will it change from a "C" to an "H"?

I'm curious when trouble-codes will change from a C to an H? Reason I ask is because I drove the car last night and got a "service vehicle soon" message ... checked the codes this morning and the only code present is C1281H.

Since it has an H at the end, does this mean I don't need to worry about it anymore?

C is for a current code, meaning something went wrong and is still wrong. If the computer doesn't recognize the problem any more it will go into history, H.

H means it is not a current problem but I'd still be curious as to what caused it in the first place.

Depends on what code it is- certain codes have different cycle requirements for it to be put to H. Some are 3 cycles others are 10.

Some codes (such as a C1281) set to History as soon as the engine is turned off. This is how the EBCM (which set that code) works for all codes .... the only time an EBCM code shows a "C" status is when the engine is running and the problem is, in fact, current. You can even see this by doing the following ... if it is an intermittent EBCM fault, when the warning message comes up (SERVICE ABS for example) while you are driving, turn the ignition key to the START position for a moment (it won't engage the starter) and the EBCM will think a new engine cycle has started and will reset all codes to "H" status. It's a trick used by some to get their ABS back in the middle of a race if a wheel sensor has a "glitch" for an instant.

C1281 indicates that the yaw rate sensor reported "bad" data .... did you see ACTIVE HANDLING ACTIVE before the error messages came up ???

I don't think ACTIVE HANDLING ACTIVE came up at all. This is a car I am considering purchasing. Overall it's a nice car, but on the test-drive said SERVICE VEHICLE SOON, and then came up with the C2181H code. Should I run away from this car??

If you displayed the codes on the DIC and that is the ONLY code coming up .... that's not a big issue.

Easiest way to deal with it ... ask the seller to get the problem fixed and then buy the car .... or negotiate the price down by $1,500 claiming that an EBCM replacement is, with labor, about that amount. It is unlikely the EBCM would need replacing, it is more likely the yaw sensor ... but just in case ...
