Help!! I'm close to buying a beautiful Yellow Millennium 2001 Coupe with only 3K on her. She has everything I want except it has a damn cassette and no CD. Anybody have any idea about cost to change out the unit for the factory CD unit? I need to know quick so that I can adjust the price I'm paying on the car. Thanks.
1. Add a 12 disc changer to your head unit (Approx. $250)
2. Get a single disc in-dash head unit to replace what you have (varies...)
3. #2 and add a 12 disc changer
It's been my experience that you can find "as new" in dash CD units in the for sale section here at CorvetteForum.com without much problem. The going price is $100-$150. It's a simple r/r swap to change from casette to cd head unit.
What I'm saying is... if you like the car, and the price is right, do NOT let a simple casette head unit stop you. That's easily changed. :yesnod:
How about, ditch the cassette for an in-dash cd head unit, and STILL add the 12 disk changer to the trunk? That's what I did. (well, technically I *had* the changer, I just ditched the in dash cassette)
Don't lose the deal on the car over this...Whay not get the best of both worlds and get the CD changer so you can play both CD AND cassette?
Ken Fichtner has the CA changers and installation kits on this Forum. :chevy :seeya :yesnod:
OK, I'm buying the car today. The CD changer added to the cassette unit in the dash sounds good to me. Will the cassette unit I currently have operate the CD changer and show me the CD information? And if so, how do I hook up with this
Ken Fichtner and get his setup? :yesnod:
My Z06 came with the cd player but not the changer. I just installed it myself recently just on the aft side of the ridge behind the passengers seat facing the drivers side so i can easily access the cartridge while driving. The part number for the 12 cd changer is 12495746, the install kit is 12497876 which i ordered both through gmpartsdirect.com for a total of 438.25 including shipping, Ken Fichtner wanted about 500.00 for the same including shipping. The install kit comes with the harness, 2 side plates, and 1 base plate. There were 2 plugs that the harness attaches too which are in the lower right corner of the pasenger foot well area, the 3 wire plug has a piece of white tape on it and the 4 wire plug is attached to the frame with one of those plastic barbed push type plugs. After connecting the 2 plugs i ran the harness under the passenger trim panel and up under the carpet behind the passengers seat then over that ridge behind the seat and stopped there. I installed the base plate under the carpet and cut 4 small holes for the studs to poke through, then attached the side plates to the base plate and then installed the cd changer and connected the plug to it. Normally the base plate had a 90 degree bend on one edge because it was designed to be installed in the rear trunk well area and that 90 degree bend helps support the changer. But since I installed it on a flat surface behind the passengers seat i cut that 90 degree part off so it would lay flat. Anyway, it works great and the controls work perfectly with the radio. I know you mentioned you had a cassette player so im not exactly sure how it will interface with it, but im sure they (gm) would have designed it so that it would work. I know in the owners manual it talks about the different setup of radios, look in there and see if it mentions the aux button on your setup.
