Default Vortex Filter FILTHY after 20K miles!!

I would strongly recommend cleaning your vortex filter after 15K Miles (I'm lazy) in NORMAL driving conditions.. I must have removed about 1/4 cup of sand alone! Waiting to dry and re-oil and I'm sure she'll run better!

We recommend 10-15k on cleanings, depending on condtions. Here in TX, it's dusty:) so, 10k is what I clean at.

I live in a similar environment and clean mine every 5k. It's good insurance!

I have an extra filter, so I rotate them at every other 3500 mile oil change. I have yet to find anything at all in the filter. :)

What do you need to use to clean the Vortex Filter? K&N filter cleaner? TIA!

Cold air filters really do pick up some debris. I clean mine around every 7-10K also.

FYI--After you've Simple Greened and thoroughly rinsed (from inside out!!) the filter, it takes about a year to dry before you can add the K&N filter oil. Maybe two years!!! So, plan ahead for this job. I recall that some guys used their shopvac or leaf blowers to speed up the drying process. I suppose putting it in the wife's convection oven, at a low 175, will help, too. But again, it's best to think of the filter as a wet towel that you can't wring or squeeze, so imagine how long that would take to dry and plan accordingly.

So what do you use to re-oil? Anything other than the K&N filter oil? Can I get something at the local auto parts store?

Thanks

You can go to Pep Boys or O-Rielly to get the re-charge kit... The filter is the same as a K&N filter and is fairly easy to clean.. Kit cost about $11... And no, you don't hafta let it dry for a year..

Here's how I did it...

Use a brush/toothpick to get the small rocks out of the filter or any large objects.. Next, spray the filter cleaner HEAVILY on the filter in and out and let sit for about 10 minutes.. Rinse thoroughly from the INSIDE OUT with low pressure until the water is nice and clean.. Next, set outside in the sun for about 3 hours.. After it dries a little, spray the re-charge oil (Now's it an aresol spray) only 1 pass around the filter, don't over do it.. Let sit for about 20 minutes and re-install... Next time I will clean every other oil change!!

At 20K even the stock air filter in the stock airbox would be dirty, so it would stand to reason that a cold air filter would need more frequent attention.
