1st to 4th Gear Shift Light???

1st to 4th Gear Shift Light???
Hey Guys,
On my 2004 C5 when taking off from a stop, at a certain rpm range a light appears that basically tells me to shift from 1st to 4th, but in city driving i dont always want to, is there a way to disable this? what is it? and why would anyone possibly want a car telling us how to drive? haha

2nd and 3rd are locked, i either have to speed up or slow down to get into 2nd, yes used, 5,800km's on it, but the light is legit, its on the dash, so i dont think its after market

Called a skip shift eliminator. It just plugs in, the light still shows but it does NOT LOCK out the gears.

They put it on from GM to save fuel (I believe)
