Default Vette Noob

Hi, all:

My father passed away on June 6th this year and I bought his baby: a 99 pewter convertible with 58K miles.

I'm a total vette noobie, but I did manage to drive the vette from AZ to FL this week without incident.

However, I have a few questions and issues that I'm hoping you can help me with, and I'd deeply appreciate it!

1) The parking brake doesn't seem to hold well. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong, but the car has twice rolled on me. I set in reverse, clutch down, stomp on brake, raise parking lever, shut down car, release clutch, and she rolls...

2) The seal on the passenger's side window--where the glass meets the convertible top, is not tight, and you can hear the air flow coming in. How can I address this, short of replacing all that rubber on the convertible top edge?

3) The interior driver's side post just left of the windshield has a slight cut in it, as if the material got too hot and cracked. Is this easy to fix? Do professionals do this cheaply?

4) I'm trying to find some baseline numbers for cooling temp, oil temp, and oil pressure. The manual seems kinda vague. During my road trip I was running about 194-6 cooling temp, about 41 oil pressure, and about 214 oil temp. Normal?

That's all for now. I'm sure I will have a 100 more noob questions! Thanks guys! Mad Dog Peter, Florida

Welcome to the forum!

Sorry to hear about your father's passing.

Not sure about any of the Q's except temps. They're good in this heat. I'm sure you drove across the south and all of the southern states are hot, so your temps are good and reasonable. 235 is still deemed acceptable, although it makes me nervous.

I forgot to mention that your e-brake probably needs adjustment, but I'm not familiar with the procedure. You have linings inside the rotors specifically for parking brake only.

Also before you adjusting anything give it a good yank, it wont hold well if the lever is only half way up.

Thanks, guys. Yeah, I've been reading more posts about various issues with parking brakes. If you have it in neutral and set the brake, she rolls for sure. She seems solid in first gear, though, with brake on. I think I was pressing the button while lifting, but now I just let her click up with my foot firmly on the brake pedal. I'll see if this makes a difference.
