Yes you do have a problem. The column MUST be in the UNLOCKED position when installing the CLB.

A trip to the dealer may be in your future.

Before you get to that point you may be able to get the column lock to disengage by violently jerking the steering wheel left and right followed by turning the ignition key to on.

Be aware that this should only be attempted when you have the CLB in hand AND you are ready to install the CLB, because this may be a one time temporary fix to unlock the column. If you allow the column to re-lock it may never un-lock again. This is when the dealer must replace the column lock assembly -$$$$$$.

Worth a try but be aware it would be best to have the CLB in hand and ready to install if/when that column unlocks.

Can't the supplier do overnight shipping? Worth the cost if you must have the car running ASAP.

P.S. Be sure the car battery is fully charged. (Always a good idea with these cars)

I just had the same problem and had to take it to the dealer this morning. I was told that they won't fix it for free again.

BTW- where can I order this CLB from and how much is it?

The dealer is going to charge me $400 for my visit today.

Most popular kit for CLB is this one ... it includes a "throw away" harness to help unlock the column if it is currently locked.

GM ended reimbursement for the column lock at the end of February of this year. ANY work on the column lock is treated like any other work on the car .... you pay time and materials .....

Will this CLB prevent the car from also disengaging the fuel system?

As the problem with my car was that I could turn the steering wheel but could not drive it as it would stall. So will the CLB assure that this doesn't happen?

Nope, that's a security issue, most likely with your key or ignition switch that reads the key.

this worked like a charm! the mechanic at my local shop basically threw in the towel and send i should send it off to the dealer, but i said "let me try one more thing" and yup... it worked... he was very impressed and didnt charge me for anything ha... so i drove it home, put it in the garage (and left the key in) and now i'm just waiting for my CLB to come... thanks for the link 8vette7 - i owe you
