Humm, If your not rubbing anywhere. I would guess wheel bearings. I'd try jacking up the car, and spinning the wheels also push / pull on the wheel to see if there's any play / slop.. It's a start! Good luck! Could be brakes too.. Frozen piston / pad?
thanks..I'll get it up on a lift this weekend and go from there was hoping I could get a general Idea of how to trouble shoot it and what to look out for...
FWIW, when my wheels bearing(s) went south it was more of a "whining/groaning" noise than a "grinding". I suppose yours could fail differently than mine did .. just thought I'd toss it out there. Good luck!
wheel bearing. when mine only started to go I got an "intermittent" grinding sound. Progressed from there more steady in nature. Quick but not cheap change out.
found the write up...seems like osmethng I can do myself and at $155 each side seems on par with part prices for a vette...lol
I have a few friends here local I might be able to get to help out so I guess I need to get the word out there...Im just hoping it is infact the bearing seems like its gettin progessivley worse guess I will know more come saturday..thanks for the input guys...
22655td your bearing went out as I decribe mine going out? how long after you heard the noise did u swap them out..
Going around corners in town, I would hear grinding type sounds that I was sure was the rear wheel bearings. I put in new ones and still had the sound. So I drained the rear end fluid and found that it only had a little over half a quart in it rather than the 1.6 quarts it should have had. I put in new fluid and anti-slip additive as specified. Still had the same noise. So, I spent for a brand new differential from GM and installed by the dealer. I got in it and headed for the freeway and still had the same noise.
Knowing that I had some rear tire cupping going on and by pure luck, finding someone who was selling a new set of GY D-3's which is what I had on it, for a real good price, I changed tires. Noise gone.
I was hearing a warbling sound at freeway speeds and the grinding type noise in town and only going around corners before the tire replacement.
