Just remove the hex head screws on the top of the shifter base, change the springs, and re-install the screws using loctite on the threads.
I think the Hurst instructions say to reinstall the screws approx. 3-1/2 turns as a starting point for an adjustment.
You can also leave the existing springs in place, and make a minor adjustment by turning the adjusting screws up to one full turn in either direction from the factory.
They may go flying if you don't keep some downward pressure on the setscrews as you unscrew them. The springs are pretty strong and there is usually one inside the other if they've never been removed. Other than that, straightforward. I always used just one light spring on each side and the side loads were still adequate.
