Default Help with engine #

I looked under my car on the drivers side where the engine # is supposed to be and I found a # 137006. I am trying to find out if the engine is a 98 or 2001. I have the manual for a 98 and it is where the book says a 9 digit # should be. Any ideas on what this # is?

You want a PIA job? This is from '02 (and '02 service manual). The # is stamped on the rear edge of the block on the left (driver) side. Only visible from the bottom. If your car has pup cats like mine, look just above the one on the left side. This is on the flange that the bell housing bolts to. The first pad you see has a mystery (to me) #. Look on up above it, might have to move a wireing harness out of the way, I did. It's a 9 digit # which should match the last 9 digits of your vin #. I sure hope this helps you, and maybe someone else!

Oh, the second # of the 9 digit # is the year. Example, on my '02, the second # is "2"

The mystery # on mine is a 7 digit #. Look up higher on the next pad for the 9 digit #

The 9 character stamping is known as a "VIN derivative" ...

Here's how the positions should match up ....

1 = GM Division Identifier (1 = Chevrolet)
2 = Model Year (1 = 2001, 2 = 2002, V = 1997, W = 1998, X = 1999, etc.)
3 = Assembly Plant (5 = Bowling Green)
4-9 = Plant Sequence Number ( last 6 digits of your VIN)

So the number should (if it is the original engine installed at the factory) look like ....

1W5xxxxxx (where xxxxxx = last 6 numbers of your VIN ... and the W assumes a 1998 car).

I believe crate engines come with no stamping.
