My car was trucked to a shop today, it had sat dead for a week, it turns out I had a bad alternator, and as I out warranty. a cool $450 down the drain.
There are 6 dealers in my area, none had one, so I wait until Friday to get my car back.
Sorry 3rdtoy...............
I got one you'll not believe( almost as bad a dealers 6, not stocking an alternator).
I had a flat on my Z, used up the Milk of Magnesia, and went the dealer where i bought the car.
Said, we don't stock that.......checked EVERY parts dealership inventory in DFW metroplex...........NOT 1, had it or stocked it.
Took 4 weeks to get, and came from( of all places) Germany......made by Dunlop!!!!!!!
Go figure..............$60.00 per jug...... :mad
The $450 break down is as follows, $50 flat bed truck to shop, $75 labor, $325 discounted alternator.
It is a very easy install, the cost of the part is retail around $400!! I would hate to try to build a car from parts, a $50K vette would cost $500K.
Ira
Bummer! I'm glad the toy is alive again though. When I had my sail boat, I hated to buy anything "marine", as I knew it would be over priced. Vettes have the same peculiar co$t multiplying effect. :yesnod:
Those alternators are rebuildable. Don't they supply parts for them yet. I always replaced brushes and regulaters in all my chevyAlternators for about 25.00
Sounds like a real bargain by comparison. I needed to buy a 1997-98 Ducati ST2 (motorcycle) alternator recently (it fits in an older Duc I'm restoring) and was quoted $1078! That is for the alternator, no labor! I finally found a used one in Sweden which I'm getting for the bargain price of $380.00
BTW, if you don't like the price of the alternator, wait till you have to replace the Air Conditioning Compressor (GM models go out about 4-5 years)! I don't know how much it is, but I can tell you it was big bucks on my 1996 Impala SS.
