Default clutch question

My clutch pedal went to the floor in a 15 minute period with no warning or signs of trouble. It's a 2003 coupe with 50k miles. My mechanic said it's either the master cylinder for the clutch or the slave valve and I should replace both. Question is, is the valve inside the transmission or external to it? Was it about due with those miles? Thanks for your input!

Do a search for sticking clutch pedal. Many threads on it. Many have said replacing fluid will help.

not sure what you mean.
did the pedal stick to the floor at a shift or is the pedal not applying pressure to the clutch?

I was actually in a parking space and was about to leave. The car didn't want to go into reverse. It would go into the forward gears fine. Afet trying for about 15 minutes to get it to go into reverse, the clutch pedal got lower and lower until finally bottoming out. I also then could not put it into any gear.

got it now
this is not the sticking clutch problem.
it sounds like your mech. listed the two most likely problems.
"My mechanic said it's either the master cylinder for the clutch or the slave valve"
the clutch master cylinder can be changed without removing the trans/tube/diff.
I would try this first.

the slave valve requires the removal of trans/tube/diff. now you should replace the whole clutch assembly. labor cost will get you later if you try to save money here

Do the clutch while your there and also install a remote bleeder while your at it. You can find threads on replacing the slave/clutch and when you see it you'll probably do this = However, it isn't as bad as it seems. In fact, its fairly easy but just time consuming. Good luck

Wouldn't it still be a good idea to check the clutch resevoir and flush the system? It won't take long, and it could be low, or that nasty black stuff that passes as fluid after a while. Just something cheap and easy to try before dropping the bones on a new clutch set up

if the clutch problem was just after a very hard run and the problem went away after everything cooled down
then I would change the fluid a few times.(search "ranger, sticking clutch)
I hope the first thing he did was check the fluid level?
if the level was very low then a fluid change and system bleed are needed.
now where did the fluid go-likely the problem would return because a part is failing.

It is most likely the slave, which of course is the harder part to replace. I also suggest installing a remote bleeder system to keep the fluid fresh when replacing the slave cylinder. I just did my clutch and slave last month at my shop, here are pics of what is involved.

I had a remote bleeder installed. Dumb question...How do I use it when I replace the fluid? I suck out fluid at reservoir often but not sure how to use this remote hose?
thanks
