Default Question about A4 shifting/performance & how a chip affects same

I notice that the performance of my machine is less than exhilerating from a rolling start at 35-40 mph. I presume that the issue is the fact that it most likely does not shift into first gear at those speeds.

My Lightning was the same way until I equipped it with a Superchip which caused it to go to first gear at much higher speeds than stock, etc. With that an a good intake system that white beauty would give a C5 all it could handle up to about 90 mph.

Questions:

1. At what speed will the C5 not go to first on application of WOT? &
2. How does something like the Powerloader affect that speed?

My car has the 3.15 "Performance" axle option. With WOT, it upshifts 1-2 at 45 mph. If the tranny selector is in "3" or "D", the max speed it will downshift to 1 when I floor it is 35 mph. That's about right, if it downshifted at any higher speed it would have to upshift immediately and actually accelerate slower.
Remember that if you put your selector in "2", it starts and stays in "2", and will not downshift. It can only downshift to "1" if the selector is in "D" or "3".
Can someone tell us how the Powerloader changes the shifting?

Interesting Jim. As I recall the Lightning, stock it would not shift back to first above 35 mph, but I believe it shifted down all the way to 50 or so with chip. It still had plenty of run, and it was awesome from a running start (it was incredibly difficult to get traction off the line). I also have the 3.15 axle. The C5 seems totally out of the power band in D at around 35-40 when going to WOT.

I have been noticing it going through tolls (with electronic collection). It is fun to punch it exiting the toll plaza - or should I say not much fun cause the performance is so bad from that speed. It is simply in too high a gear.

What Steak & Shake is it at, and what time. I know there has been a big gathering of cars at the S&S on 436 just West of the Altamonte Mall for years. Of course there is danger in riding in a car like that - the danger being to my wallet! :D

Now remember Mark, Once he rides in your car, he will definitely be looking to get loaded! :jester

Jim

P.S. The difference is unbelievable, when I kick down to 1st from around 35 to 40 mph, my tires seem to want to leave these two long black streaks on the road! :D :yesnod:

My car, with the 2.73's will light them up hard at 35 mph. Anything over that, and it only shifts to 2nd gear. This is without the HPP3. With the Hpp3, it will spin just a bit more, and downshift into 1st to about 40., but the higher shift points really make it pull harder further (if that makes any sense).

A Looser TC will get you much more "OOOMF" at a 40mph kick. Although it will not downshift to 1st, you will be at a much higher rpm due to the higher stall. You will not have that lag, and "dead spot" that you get with the stock TC. I have the 3000 Yank TC, and it is the perfect cross between drivabillity and power. Try it you'll like it.

Try a Transgoshift kit for that "instant" shift control. No more guessing "when"it will shift.Much more agressive shift points and you can feel it the SOTP for sure. Add a converter and you will be spinning the tires at will...
