I have a 2003 with 65000 miles. Today I noticed when I went to check the oil I was getting some smoke out of the dip stick. I was told I needed a PCV Valve and it would go away. Is that all it could be?
Hmmm, not sure.
I guess you can check your PCV connections, hoses, and replace the valve.
You may want to do a compression/leak down test on all cylinders, if it continues.
Smoke vacates when not running, but is this after just idling?
When was the last time you drove the car 'hard'?
Other possible considerations...
Are your oil temps normal? Oil pressure normal?
Check your coolant level for useage/loss.
"Blow by" internal gases look for the path of least resistance...be in an old fashioned road draft tube, PCV, valve cover breather(s), dip stick, oil fill cap or through gaskets.
The PCV is a possibility and it's certainly cheap enough to replace and find out.
Worst case scenario, you might have some internal issue(s) that is causing the issue. If the car had just been running before you checked the oil, the smoke is not uncommon. But, the motor that might have rings or valves in need of repair. Do the leak down test as suggested.
With the engine running, open the oil fill cap and see if you can feel air coming out or any type of positive pressure. If so then you have a ring seal problem. Do a compression check at that point.
Replaced the PCV today and it still smokes after driving the car out of the dip stick. The PCV we replaced seems a little clogged When it is running there is no smoke. The car runs great with no codes. Should I have a compression check done is this normal? I would have never noticed if someone didn't point it out to me.
If it runs good and you have no codes, just enjoy it. Watch your oil level on a more regular basis.
If you determine that you're losing oil at an increased rate, then decide what you want to do...
It burns no oil thats for sure. I just went on a 1500 mile road trip and it used no oil. I did drive a 2000 5 speed today and got out and checked the oil right after driving it and saw the same thing. Is this kinda normal for a Vett.
