Default Thermostat question.

What is the best thermostat to use in the N. TX area?? Can be extremely hot in the summer and dang cold in the winter. Is it hard to install yourself and how long does it generally take?? Thx all!

Intel55: Are YOU using a 172/178 thermostat? If so, does it work in cold climates? I tried two different ones, just to make sure, and neither one worked correctly! Neither one would allow the engine to stay warm enough, I was seeing constant coolant temps in the 120's and 130's. The manufacturer (vendor, really) ASSURED me they were fine, and charged me to take them back. :mad Unless they have changed the design,DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON THESE PIECES OF JUNK. I'm now running the Hypertech 160, it is working fine, hot or cold outside, my coolant temps are in the 169 to 180 range, (with fan settings changed) and that's enough to keep my Vert toasty inside :yesnod: That's the one I reccommend.

I agree with 6Speeder. I tried the 172 from BPP and it was terrible in the winter. Heater doesn't work to well when the coolant temp is still 129 degrees after driving 20 miles. Switched to a Hypertech thermostat, and it works as advertised. Got mine from Corvettes of Houston for about $59.

hmmm sounds like you got a bad one. With coolant temps in the 120-130's??? Wow that thing must have been stuck open and stayed that way and fans running. I have the BPP 172/178. I have not installed it yet though. Don't drive the Vette that much in the winter. But I do know a few guys with the same thermo and they see temps in the high 170's low-mid 180's with changed fans. 160 would have too cold for me here in Chicago I think. I will check my thermo to see if it works before I install it. Thanks for the heads up :D

whoa TWO guys that tried the BPP and had problems!!! Now I am for sure going to check this thermo!!

Ya, two guys and THREE thermostats, all doing the same thing. Sorry if I come on a little strong on this one, but I hate it when someone pees on my head and tries to tell me it's raining.

As for the 160 being too cold, I have driven when it's in the 20's, and have constant coolant temps in the low 170's. Seems fine to me. 160 is the point at which the thermostat STARTS to open.

160 degree is what I'm running. It should come with directions. Basically drain out about 2 gallons of radiator fluid (some people skip this step) then remove the old one. Install new one making sure that the O ring stays in the groove, then refill the radiator making sure to run the car long enough so that the thermostat opens up and you completely fill the system. Make sure it doesn't leak.

My 172/178 from the vendor you referred to works perfectly, even in cold weather.

C5go: I'm glad for you that it's working as it should. It seems some are bad, some work. Really, that just emphasizes why I'm unhappy with the vendor, it wasn't my fault that neither worked, nor his, but a QUALITY vendor will stand behind his products, and replace them or refund your money if they are defective. I spent well over $1,500.00 with this guy and he won't give me a full refund on a $70 thermostat?!! :mad

By the way, I have NEVER given the vendor's name in my posts, just identified the junk product I'd stay away from. Some of his products work well.

From here on, I will work with vendors which stand behind their products. LAPD is a great vendor on the forum, excellent customer service, good prices, and fast, fast, fast. :yesnod:

I had the same exact problem with BPP on their 172/178.. in the winter months, NO HEAT.. 130-140 max.. I threw it away and went with the hypertech which worked fine. However, in heavy traffic, with the ac on, on a very hot day, I still got too hot.. I recently installed the Rippie Radiator and oil cooler kit and went back to a stock tstat.. now I stay 190-195 nearly all day and my oil temps stay very cool!
