I posted about frequently missing 3rd gear when shifting rapidly on the forum. The convential wisdom I rec'd was not to grip the stick when going to 3rd gear but to push the stick with the heel of my palm. I tried it and it works great. Have not missed third again. Sould work even better with my Kirban which is being installed next week! Thanks forum, Any other hints?
When you shift into 4th, keep your thumb pointed down. If you grab the shifter with your thumb pointed up (as a lot of people do, the pistol type grip) you have a tendancy to pull the shifter toward you. This can lead to the dreaded 3-2 shift when running hard (and can lead to the dreaded bent pushrods). Try it and see.
If you shift to 4th the same way you hit 3rd then you should NEVER hit 2nd. I can see hitting 2nd trying to get to 4th from 6th. The centering spring keeps the stick lined up with 3rd and 4th.
Sometimes I have the problem of missing 3rd. I'm going to start pushing with my palm when going into 3rd. I don''t think I've even been going fast enough to aggressivly shift into 4th, but maybe someday... :)
There are common Hydraulic backup problems when shifting into 3rd after progressive hi-rpm redline shifts. The modified M/C line addresses this problem. Makes a HUGE feel difference. Return hydraulic pressure is Awesome. Feels like a totally different clutch system. A quality one vs. a GM POS. GM added a line restriction in the middle to soften shock to the drivetrain and increase clutch slippage/wear.
I will have to try this out. Be sure to let us know how you like the Kirban. I have tried a Ripper and it was WAY too stiff for me and I am not about to jump on the Hurst-wait bandwagon. :D
I have the B&M Ripper. the centering springs are tight, but that's the price you pay for never making the 3 to 2 shift/bent rods mistake at high RPM :p:
The newer B&M's aren't as tight. Might want to get a new one from LAPD for $160. Not that expensive. I'm sure you can sell yours used. Sold my older B&M very fast. Actually within 30 minutes of coming out of the car!! ;)
