Hey guys,
I have a 99 coupe with bolt ons only thus far. I have plans to change the cam and heads at a later time. The rear diff is my current point of concern today. I have the stock unit (2.73) installed currently and have plans in place to change the gear box out for a 3.90 set. I have heard from some that replacing the Torque Converter now would be a good idea. It has even been described as "the best bang for the buck". While I understand it would be wise to handle this while the gearbox is removed, and it would save some future labor costs, I'm not convinced it's something that I NEED to do. Any help and input would be great.
If you don't have a big converter, you can't enjoy a big cam. Do it whenever you like, but you'll eventually end up doing it. It doesn't take that long to swap rear ends. It takes much longer to swap trannys. Just do the rear end for now, put your new cam in and then when your driveability sucks because it won't idle, your decision will be made more easily.
Thanks for the input and time guys. Will most likely go ahead and knock it out while they have the rear end off the car. I have a quote for an additional $400 for the added labor plus the cost of the converter itself. Seems like a good deal seeing how there is much more involved to get to it.
Thanks again!
Yes, do the converter....You'll be happy you did. It makes driving a car with a healthy cam a breeze. I went with a Yank SS3600 and it's great with my 3:73's and G5X3 cam.
